The Birds and the Bees—and Fish

I traveled to Kenya and Mozambique to see how sex education takes place in communities where there is often a stigma associated with things like condom usage and birth control. To put it bluntly, old ideas still carry weight. Ideas like, if your wife wants you to use a condom or wants to use a birth control pill, she must be sleeping around. Pathfinder International is trying to address this with proper education.

But rather than bring a purely western approach to these communities, the new messages are shared through local voices. They travel to places like fishing villages to both distribute condoms, but also to teach about the realities of family planning, and help to remove these harmful ideas around it.

I spent time with a family of advocate-teachers, who practice what they preach. They are essentially the innovators stepping up to spread the news.
